“A daughter?” Adam exclaimed. “I thought you’d never married Miss Dietrich!

“The older woman sighed. “I never had the chance.”

“What do you mean?”

She got that faraway look again. “The boys were all going to war. Korea. Eddie left before I even knew about the baby.” She wrung her hands.

“That must have been hard,” Adam said. “Then what happened?”

“My parents were furious, even though Eddie planned to marry me as soon as he came home.” She paused. “But he never made it.”

“I’m so sorry.”

“I didn’t want to but…” her voice shook. “I gave her away.”
